With the increasing rate of urbanization, the amount of waste generation is also increasing day by day, making it difficult for the municipality to handle. Panauti Municipality is currently facing a problem with the solid waste management that include the lack of institutional capacity, financial and trained human resources, SWM plans, programs and strategies, necessary infrastructure, equipment and most important of all, the general awareness and motivation regarding SWM among the local communities. This project entitled “Developing a Model of Green Municipality” is an EU supported 4 year program with the partner organizations Panauti Municipality (Lead organization), WEPCO and IUCN. The major objective of the project is to demonstrate effective and efficient mechanisms/systems for combined Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) and Natural Resource Management (NRM) practices, by organizing and mobilizing local communities. Specific Objectives that will be carried out are to strengthen the institutional capacity of Panauti Municipality, to identify, test and select the best combined ISM and NRM practices and to document and share the lessons learnt from the actions to influence national policy and institutional processes for effective planning.
